Why now is a great time to get into VR

VR is cheaper and easier than ever

Clayton Ashley , senior video editor, has been producing and editing videos for Polygon since 2016. He is the lead producer of the tabletop gaming series Overboard.

Virtual reality gaming is a tough sell. It’s expensive, requires a bunch of free space, and requires some powerful equipment. Or at least, that used to be true. Things have changed dramatically in VR gaming and it’s all for the better.

That’s why I made the video above, because I think there’s never been a better time to get into VR gaming. There are numerous headsets to choose from and they’re much more affordable. The game library for the biggest VR headsets is brimming with excellent games and even some downright masterpieces (you can find three of them in our top 50 games of 2018).

Virtual reality gaming is also a substantively less risky bet than it was even a few years ago. Buying a VR headset in 2016 meant investing in an expensive piece of hardware that might not be supported in a few years. Instead of dying a slow death, VR gaming has grown and the future looks promising. Major studios are still making VR games and we’re starting to see sequels to successful VR games.

Most of all, I want more people to give VR a try. It’s an experience that’s hard to show or convey to someone. Trying it is really the only way to get it, and here’s hoping a lot more people finally get to try out virtual reality for themselves.
