What if Final Fantasy 7 was an N64 game?

It might go a little something like this ...

Patrick Gill (he/him) has been making serious and unserious videos for Polygon since 2016. He also co-hosts & produces Polygon’s weekly livestreams on Twitch.

Final Fantasy is inescapable. There’s a good chance you’ve played one of its 50-plus numbered entries or spinoffs. Maybe you’ve even watched the direct-to-DVD movies, seen the soundtrack performed live, or gotten Cloud’s sword tattooed on your body.

But there is a world where you didn’t. It’s a world where the tumultuous development of Final Fantasy 7 went a little differently. An alternate universe where Snagglepuss marries Tifa Lockhart, Jared Leto is doctor Robotnik, and a different JRPG franchise has a chance to step onto the international stage ... Dragon Quest.

Verses is a new show on our YouTube channel where we take a long, hard look at what happened, and also what could have happened. I started with the question “what if Final Fantasy had failed in the United States?” At first, I pictured Dragon Quest rushing in to fill the void. Then came crossover films. Slimes hovering above the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade.

But it doesn’t quite end up that way! Check the video up top to join me on a journey of discovery.
