Watch Dogs: Legion isn’t really a game about guns — although you can choose to play it that way. Instead, Legion is a game of gadgets, hacks, and trickery. To succeed, you need a tool for the job, and you have many choices.
Some agents come with their own gadgets, but all agents can hold one of six generic gadgets from the Tech menu. Because you have to invest Tech Points to unlock each gadget — and upgrade them to their full potential — you’ll need to make some decisions early on.
Here’s a look at each of the six gadgets from the Tech menu, and which ones we think are worthwhile.
We’re starting out with the best one — certainly our favorite.
The Infiltrator Spiderbot is your own personal proxy. You can drop it and pilot it through all sorts of environments. It can hack for you, silently take down enemies for you, and even collect collectibles. It’s the perfect companion, and it’s necessary for some puzzles. (You’ll usually find a disposable Spiderbot station if you need one for a puzzle, but that won’t come with any of your upgrades.)
You can eventually augment the Spiderbot with a sprint function and a double jump, making it move much faster and enabling it to climb up to high places. You can also add a cloak, which keeps the Spiderbot safe.
We’ve used the Infiltrator Spiderbot more than any other gadget on this list, and it’s very useful if you’re into stealth, melee, or a safer play style. Just pick this one if you’re having a hard time deciding which gadget you want.

The AR Cloak turns your agent invisible for a short time, confusing pursuing guards and allowing for a swift escape should you need it. You can unlock an upgrade that decreases the cloak’s drain speed while you’re standing still or walking slow. The final upgrade increases your takedown distance.
The AR Cloak is good and pretty handy in some tough spots. If you’re sneaking around a group of enemies, you can pop the invisibility if you’re about to get caught. You can also use it as a way to sneak past stubborn guards that won’t move out of the way. The AR Cloak lets you bypass some stealth encounters — if you’re quick — by removing the need to sneak at all.
The Electro-Fist is like a brass knuckles augment to your attack. When you activate it, you’ll instantly knock out your target — no fistfight required. The first upgrade causes electricity to jump to a nearby target, shocking two enemies. The final upgrade causes the Electro-Fist to launch a shockwave that stuns nearby enemies.
These are great if you want to go all-in on combat, and it recharges quickly. If you want to jump into an area and just beat every guard you see, then this is the gadget for you.
Then again, even its first level works well when you’re being stealthy, and you can quickly knock out someone who finds your hiding spot.
This is the gadget you have in the prologue. As a refresher, you throw a mine that acts as a shock trap, setting a proximity area where it lands. It instantly knocks enemies out and deals bonus damage to drones and vehicles. You can upgrade it to add an EMP, which further disrupts enemies. And the final upgrade causes the EMP to jam enemy weapons.
This little trap is really powerful and versatile. If you play like an action hero, you can throw it mid combat to cause a big explosion. If you want to be stealthy, you can use this to lure enemies into traps from a safe distance. If you like to mix up your playstyle, this is probably the gadget for you.
The Spiderbot works similarly to the Infiltrator Spiderbot. But instead of taking enemies down silently, the Combat Spiderbot will transform into a turret if you aren’t controlling it. The first upgrade increases the turret’s rate of fire, while the second upgrade lets you manually shoot the turret while controlling the Spiderbot.
This is the Infiltrator Spiderbot for players that like to get in on the action sometimes. It can’t ever jump or run the way the Infiltrator Spiderbot can, but it becomes a serious combat buddy if you get into a scrape. You can even set it on your car and it’ll shoot at enemies while you drive around.
If you love the idea of the Infiltrator Spiderbot but find yourself unable to maintain stealth, consider this non-lethal alternative.
The missile drone is for combat junkies and the people who really want to cause chaos in London. When you hit the gadget button, you launch the drone like a missile toward a target. And when the Missile Drone reaches the target, it explodes, killing them. You can upgrade the Missile Drone with a lock-on feature and cluster missiles that appear after the initial explosion.
If you want to blow stuff up and kill enemies left and right — instead of just incapacitating them, potentially persevering them as a potential recruit — then this is the gadget for you. It’s loud, destructive, and a ton of fun to use.
