The Witcher’s original opening redone in The Witcher 3

The closest you’ll get to a remaster anytime soon

Owen S. Good is a longtime veteran of video games writing, well known for his coverage of sports and racing games.

A modder has brought the playable prologue sequence of The Witcher — launched a decade ago — into The Witcher 3. As of now, this is the best fans can hope for when it comes to a remaster of the groundbreaking original game.

This video, just under an hour long, is courtesy of the modder erxv, whose work can be found on Nexusmods. Some before-and-after shots show that plenty of work went into building out this updated stage. Some of the player models come from the new game, but others were created specifically for this mod.

Right now, it’s just a single chapter of the original game. There were 35 main questline missions spanning seven chapters in the original. That’s a lot to ask of a single modder to finish. But maybe it catches CD Projekt Red’s attention, and convinces them a remaster of the original game is worth it.
