Zelda: Breath of the Wild guide: How to beat a Molduga mini-boss

It’s all about bombs, two-handed weapons and Tremors

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild has several mini-bosses, and the super powerful Moldugas are among the most intimidating. They swim through the sands in far southwestern Hyrule, in the arid region beyond Gerudo Town. In this guide, we’ll teach you how beat them.

Prepare for the Molduga fight

A Molduga can kill you with just one hit, even if you have many hearts, so it’s worth preparing before you even begin the fight. You can’t guarantee a hitless battle, so here’s what we suggest:

  • Equip your most powerful armor. Molduga attacks deliver a shocking amount of damage, but strong armor can absorb some of the
  • Upgrade your armor. Consider visiting fairy fountains to upgrade your armor.
  • Get some temporary hearts. Get and cook some Hearty Durians, so you can enter the fight with as many as 20 extra hearts.
  • Make sure you have a powerful two-handed weapon. Fighting Moldugas is about making the most of the moments when they’re immobilized. A spinning attack with powerful two-handed weapon can deal a ton of damage in a short amount of time.

How to defeat a Molduga

If you’ve ever seen any of the Tremors movies, you’ll understand how Moldugas work. In short, they can hear you when you walk on sand. That makes them dangerous (because they can figure out where you are) and vulnerable (because they can’t distinguish between sounds).

Search the area around a Molduga for rocks. Climb on top of a large rock outcropping, and the Molduga can’t hear you. This is where you launch the first phase of your attack.

While you’re standing on a rock, equip remote bombs and throw them into the sand when a Molduga gets close. A question mark will appear above the Molduga’s head, and it’ll swim through the sand and dive out of the ground to eat it.

Detonate the bomb, and you’ll immobilize the Molduga temporarily. Run to it, and unload with your most powerful attacks.

As you can see in the video above, it’s also possible to detonate a bomb while the Molduga is swimming around angrily after being attacked.

Check out the video above to see the process in action — and the rewards you’ll get for emerging victorious.

Now that you know how to defeat a Molduga (and you’re in the area), check out our walkthrough for Tho Kayu shrine, which is hidden in the area and protected by a Molduga.
