The very first thing you need to do in Link’s Awakening is find your sword and your shield. Your shield is nearby and easy to collect. Using that, you’ll be able to go collect your sword.

This guide will walk you through finding your weapons so you can go tackle the rest of Koholint Island.

As soon as you wake up, talk to Marin to find out where you should go first to find your sword. Then talk to her father Tarin to get your shield — you’re going to need it to get your sword.

Find your sword

Make your way through Mabe Village to the left. Against the leftmost side, you’ll find the library with a few helpful tutorials about buttons. From the library, head down.

Drop down off of the ledges heading south (or take the long way around with ramps and stairs) until you reach the Toronbo Shores. You’ll know you’re in the right place when you see sand and a bunch of Octoroks and Sea Urchins.

Use your shield to defend against the Octoroks and shove the Sea Urchins. You might also bump into some Leevers — spinning, machine-looking things. Just avoid them for now. Your goal is to work your way right along the shoreline.

Keep moving right until you find your sword just off the beach. Right before you claim it, Owl will show up to tell you where to go next — the Mysterious Forest to the north.
